Ioannis Drimonakos

Ioannis Drimonakos won the silver medal in the 200m fly at the European Swimming Championships held in Budapest in August 2006.

The Greek swimmer finished in 1.57.02 minutes, just behind Pavel Korzeniowski from Poland who won the gold medal in 1.55.04 minutes and set a new games record. “I’m excited,” said the Greek champion and scholar. “I really tired myself out this year, but I managed to finish in the medal standings. Not only that, but I have the best time. Luck is finally starting to smile upon me.”

Born in Athens in 1984, Ioannis Drimonakos is the best Greek fly swimmer. He first appeared in international pools in 1999. In the summer of 2001, he won the gold medal at the European Junior Championships in Malta and in 2000, at just 16 years of age, he took part in the Olympic Games.

In 2002 in Linz, Austria, he became the first Greek swimmer to win two gold medals at two different European Championship events. He is the Greek 200m fly champion and Panhellenic record holder.
