Last September, the Foundation’s scholar Esther Lemi, representing Hellas in the Music Section of the XII Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, presented her work ‘Sentimental Technology: Red Circle’ in a post-midnight concert given at the castle of St. Elmo in Napoli.
Her ‘Red Circle’ is a musical installation where musical parts interchange with moments of “dancing” noise on a rhythmic axis. The first part of the title refers to the composition of an electronic music that aims at rising emotion. The second part of the title refers to the image which, no matter how stronger a narrating medium may be, it should stand as a ‘deuteragonist’ so that the abstract power of musical procedure would not become misinterpreted.
Lemi's work experiments with multimedia; she has a strong belief in the combination of arts and the exchange of elements among them. In 2003, she participated again in the Biennial of Young Artists as a visual artist; this year, she participates as a composer too.
Esther Lemi graduated from the Athens University of Fine Arts with a diploma in Painting. Having been granted a scholarship by the Onassis Foundation, she pursued her postgraduate studies in the Berlin University of Arts from which she graduated in 2003.
The following year, she obtained her diploma in Composition from “OMEA”, Athens. She has participated in exhibitions, concerts and performances both in Hellas and abroad. Her works have been asked to be performed and recorded as part of the activities for the European Cultural Capital, Patra 2006 Festival.
