In the annual International Congress of the European Society of Cardiology, which took place in Barcelona between August 29 and September 2, Dr. Ioannis Chatzizisis pilot study entitled Augmented expression of extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes by low endothelial shear stress promotes the formation of coronary atheromata with thin fibrous caps received the best study award accompanied by a monetary prize of 1,500 euros.
In December 2008, the scholar was also awarded by the Academy of Athens with the "Ioannis Vlysidis Family Award", in commemoration of Antigoni Vlysidi, for the best published medical study and received a monetary prize of 3,000 euros.
Ioannis S. Chatzizisis has graduated from the Aristotle University Medical School where he also completed his postgraduate and doctoral studies. He conducted his postdoctoral study in the molecular biology of atherosclerosis at Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences, Massachusets Institute of Technology, on a scholarship by the Onassis Foundation. He has published a significant number of articles in both Greek and foreign journals, and has also been awarded for his work by national and international scientific institutions.
At present, he holds a researcher position at Aristotle University Medical School, while finishing his specialization in Cardiology at the A.H.E.P.A. University Hospital of Thessaloniki.
