Varvara Gyra

Varvara Gyra guitar lyrically accompanied the adaptation of Kavafis poetry for the theatre, performed at the National Theatre of Toulouse on June 13, 2009, in the context of the Festival of Words (Marathon de Mots), organized annually since 2004.

This year theme was Cairo and Alexandria. Solist Varvara Gyra accompanied with her guitar the world renowned French actor, Lambert Wilson, and Polydoros Vogiatzis, who participated in the recent Greek production of the musical La Cage aux Folles, in their recitation of Constantinos Kavafis poem Waiting for the Barbarians.

The performance Waiting for the Barbarians addresses the concepts of time, love, Greek history, the journey and the sea, as conveyed by Kavafis. Lambert Wilson in dark attire and with stern expression recited in French, symbolizing time and the past, while Polydoros Vogiatzis in white shirt recited sonorously in Greek and pledged youth and hope.

The purpose of Varvara Gyra guitar was to unite these two worlds, the past and the future, in a note of conciliation and repose, and reduce the distance between the Greek and the French language through her interpretation of musics of the world, classic pieces and improvisations, in an eastern mood.

The performance was also hosted at the French Institute in Athens on October 8, featuring Charlotte Rampling, Polydoros Vogiatzis and Varvara Gyra, as well as in Spain, featuring Lluίs Homar, the leading actor in Pedro Almodόvar last film Broken Embraces.
